In 1892 the Cocker Spaniel was all one breed with different varieties, according to the English Kennel Club. In the United States the AKC changed that by putting the “cockers” into their own breed standard. The American cocker spaniel and the English cocker spaniel have different distinctions. While they both stick right under twenty five pounds, they have different sizes of muzzles and the back positioning is different.
The English spaniel is made for hunting. The body of this dog is reflected in that fact. The body should have well spread out ribs for endurance and is well balanced over all. The docked tail of the English Cocker Spaniel is slightly lower in than the American in that it will distinguish the two. The coat is also a great deal longer than the American which can cause a great deal of grooming to be required. This is absolutely necessary to keep the dog neat and clean. Both spaniels have the long curly ears supposedly said to have been breed into them to help sweep the scent forward to their noses.
The English spaniel is a great hunter. Its small size and stature helps it fit through tight spaces and under small bushes. The hunting movement of the spaniel should be long and reaching. This all comes in handy when trying to scare some birds out of an area. It is usually a flushing dog, but has also been known to be good as a retriever.
Both breeds of cocker spaniels have a very happy disposition and charachter.
